Your child’s bedroom needs to be the one place in the house that reflects both their needs and their personality. This can be a bit tricky, however. Kids need to feel at ease and comfortable in their own room, but seeing as they also grow so quickly, there should be a lot of consideration for their changing needs throughout the design!
Can you make the two go hand in hand? We think so! All you have to do is take that scalable element into account whilst also keeping your child’s likes and dislikes in mind. Make the Walls Interesting
Interesting means something different to every child, so this is something to ask your little one about before you do any painting, mural work, or just put a load of stickers all over the wall.
What do they want to see on the wall every time they wake up and every time they go to sleep at night? It’ll probably be something they quite like, such as the latest Disney character, but the answer may surprise you too!
Of course, you can always leave the walls plain and tell your child they can draw all over them if they want to. Add a new bit to the picture every day – as long as the crayons don’t end up on any other wall in the house – and their room will end up looking just as unique as they are inside!
A Place for Play, a Place for Study, a Place for Relaxing
A child’s bedroom should be made with these three principles in mind. They’re going to be using this space to play, but they’re also going to be using it to study when they get old enough to bring home textbooks and homework.
And above all else, they’re going to need to find it relaxing enough to fall asleep in at night.
Take these principles into account in a 30/20/50 scenario. At least 8 hours a day are going to be spent sleeping in the bedroom, so that takes precedence, but there should be a good bit of floor space for building forts or creating an entire town with their doll houses, with just enough room for a little creativity table that doubles as a desk in the corner.
Buy a Bed That Comes with Storage (or space!)
If the bed has storage built into it – or at the very least, space for things to be put underneath – your lack of storage woes are going to be completely cut out of the equation. After all, we all know just how easy it is for a child to fill up their toy box or overflow their shelves!
But if you invest in some beds with storage for your children’s rooms, it’s going to be a thousand times easier for them to keep their rooms clutter free enough to not be a trip hazard. We’ve all stepped on a bit of lost lego in the middle of the night!
And seeing as more storage can be added to beds like these over time, you can literally grow the system with your child. If they need a couple more drawers to keep things in, you can slot those in somewhere, or with a high sleeper, even fit a new bookshelf into the nook.
Make the Floor Soft
Soft floor, happy child! If it’s hardwood or lino in the bedrooms, make sure there’s a big fluffy carpet for your child to sit on. This way you don’t need to rip up the entire floor, and you can routinely change the carpet to suit your child’s age and current style. And remember, the softer and snugger the rug, the better!
Decorate with Their Toys
Constantly wondering where to find some good and sturdy childhood bedroom decor? Look no further than their own set of toys! Set these out on shelves, ottomans, and desks and there will be no need for ornate decor that costs quite a bit and could get broken.
It’s also easy to switch out this decor as your child’s tastes change. Just take down the toys they don’t like anymore and replace them with the ones they do. That’ll save you a lot of money on needing to decorate every few months.
This also means their favourite toys are always out, in sight, and ready to play with, but never in a messy way. It’ll be a lot easier for them to keep their room clean when they just have to pick something up and put it back in its place.
They don’t even need to open up a box or slide a drawer out, which can make learning to keep things tidy a lot more simple for those of toddler age too.
Don’t Forget to Decorate the Ceiling
The ceiling is an untapped resource in a lot of kids’ bedrooms. Usually it’s left plain white and polished, but seeing as your child will be laying awake staring up at it, why not give them something fun or educational to look at?
Glow in the dark stars and planets for wannabe astronauts, or farmyard or jungle animals for those passionate about becoming a vet one day. Make the ceiling scene easy to move around and/or remove and it’s never going to take more than 5 minutes to place some new stickers up there either.
Your Child’s Bedroom Can Be Fun and Functional!
So, you need a bedroom that’ll suit all of your child’s needs and yet you want them to love their space too – impossible to achieve? Not at all! Make sure you incorporate plenty of storage, make the walls as interesting to look at as a picture book, and use some of their toys for decoration. Their bedroom will then become the best place to be in the whole house!
