Well, that’s it… Rachel and I have finally decided to take the plunge into the world of wax melts and scents and have started our very own little side business in Teddy Eva Scents! So this is a little post about what it’s going to be, why we’ve started it and perhaps why I’m talking about it before you can even buy anything.
Teddy Eva Scents – Family Named, Family Run
First things first, the name: We went with Teddy Eva as it’s the middle name of Archie and Isabelle respectively. We both really want this to be a fun, family-run business, so thought it would be best to go with a family-based name!
Obviously we don’t exactly plan on putting Isabelle and Archie to work while we sit back and do nothing – unfortunately, there are laws against that sort of behaviour – but we 100% know from experience that anything we want to do, Isabelle wants to get involved too. Just try cooking when she’s around!
So we know that Isabelle will absolutely love being the chief wax melt sniffer, even if everything “smells like ‘nilla” – according to Isabelle the majority of things are basically vanilla, which is going to be SUPER useful for knowing if things smell nice!
Why We’ve Started Teddy Eva Scents
Starting our own little creative business is something Rachel and I have wanted to do for quite a long time. We’re both wildly passionate about certain aspects of this venture. Rachel absolutely loves the creative side of all of this. She’s always happy to give something creative a go for herself, from painting characters on the bedroom wall to making our own tie-dye clothes, she genuinely gets excited about the creative side of making things.
As for me, I simply love the hustle and thrill of the work. From designing stuff, marketing, coming up with ideas for content, writing posts – I genuinely love it all! I love having a busy mind that’s constantly trying to think of new things and if something excites me enough I like to pursue it. If you’ve followed me for a while you might have already guessed that I like to dip my toe in all sorts of things from podcasting to somehow thinking I can do endurance events.
Combine our passions for this and the enjoyment we’ll get from doing it all with Archie and Isabelle, and you can see why we might be a tad bit excited about doing it!
Not Another Wax Melt Company!?
I know, I know! The wax melt industry is one that is so overly saturated at the moment, and it almost feels like everywhere you turn in the cleaning world on Instagram there seems to be another person selling wax melts. So what’s going to make us any different?
Good question. But then what makes me any different to anyone else running an Instagram account, or anyone who has a parenting blog, podcast, YouTube channel and everything else? Well, every person is unique, and as such everything a person does can be unique to them also.
Every business has the potential to be different because every person running a business is different.
I guess we just have to let our own personality, ideas and creativity help make us stand out. At the end of the day, a bakery/coffee shop just won the Apprentice and that’s one of the most over-saturated markets for physical shops in today’s world. So we’re going to do our own thing, in our own style, and hope that it works out.
Do we have any experience with wax melts?
This is possibly a question that people might have when seeing that we’re starting a wax melt business. I dare say most people start their own business after making wax melts for some time for personal use before selling them publicly. But not us. We have made scented candles with Isabelle in the past, but obviously we’ve never done anything with the intent of selling.
I honestly believe if you have the drive and commitment to put in the work, and you have the passion to make something succeed, then you can learn the work that needs to be put in.
Prior to starting this blog, I had absolutely no idea about blogging, website design, domains, SEO, video editing, accounts and being self-employed, photo editing, I wasn’t the best writer and I didn’t even have an Instagram account. Two years later I like to think I’m pretty good at all/most of those things.
I know to run this business we’ll need insurance, have to be CLP compliant, label things correctly, operate an online shop and do everything else that comes with a running a business.
We wouldn’t ever put out any products that we ourselves wouldn’t want to use, so we know when the time comes that we’re actually selling, the things we put out will be of a quality that we are happy with. We use wax melts on a regular basis and know what we like and what we don’t like, hopefully that can translate into making products that people also like!
Can you buy anything from Teddy Eva Scents?
At the moment, this is very early days in the formation of the business. So much so, that we’re not even selling anything yet! I know what you’re thinking don’t worry. What sort of weirdo starts a wax melt business, tells everyone about it but doesn’t have any wax melts to sell? Good point. But we want to share this venture from the ground up. In the same way that I show my day-to-day parenting life via Isablog – which was almost my parenting journey from the beginning as Isabelle was only 4 months old when this started – I want to share our business life via Teddy Eva Scents.
From trialling scents, making mistakes, the complications of business life, making the products, trialling the packaging, having fun with Isabelle and Archie – I want to share it all as we navigate our way doing something we’re both passionate about. Hopefully, by the time we actually launch buyable products, you might be interested in buying them. But if not, then you’ll still be able to follow along and see how much we enjoy the venture.
