Postnatal Depression and Me

Whether I like it or not, postnatal depression is a part of my parenting story. It’s not a part I expected, and it’s certainly not a part that I like, but it’s there.

If you want to read my story about it, then you can so here. Or, you can watch myself, Rachel and Isabelle talking about postnatal depression on This Morning:

Suffice to say, that was pretty surreal being on day time television. I really didn’t want to do it, but I also understand that my postnatal depression is in my past. For others, it’s either in their future or an overwhelming part of their present. So all I can do at this point is try and impart some ‘wisdom’ to try to help others.

That’s why I started the Postnatal Depression Toolkit. I’m not sure exactly how useful it is, but it’s my attempt at trying to give back and present my advice in a single place with as many things as I can think of to help someone through it.

For me, there wasn’t one thing alone that helped my recovery. It was a massive combination of things. Changing my mindset, babywearing, going to baby groups, medication (at least at first), going away with Isabelle, involving myself as much as I could, keeping my diet on track, yoga, meditation, keeping things in perspective, and a whole lot more that I will eventually get around to writing about. My point here is that you need to try as many things as you can so they all prop each other up. You can’t rely on one thing and hope for the best.

If you want to watch me talk about my story, then you can here:

If you are struggling with postnatal depression please do something about it. Don’t just read this and move on. You have to talk about it with someone. It doesn’t matter who. It can be your partner, if you’re in a relationship, a family member, a doctor, people online or even me. You can message me if you want to, I might take a while to reply, and I might not be able to help you all that much, but I am here.

Here’s my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
