Let’s be honest, we all crave companionship in some sense. Whether that’s in the form of friendship, love or purely just sex. On the surface, something like casual dating might not seem like a true answer to real companionship. No strings attached dating is notorious for leaving people feeling lonely and empty due to the lack of depth often involved in those relationships. But it doesn’t always have to be that way!
I’m here to talk about the different types of casual dating and how they can mean a lot more than just fun.
How Casual Dating Can Mean More Than Just Fun
Ok, I’ll admit that most people engage in casual dating purely for sex. And who can blame people for that? Sex is awesome.
We’re all adults. And whether we’re single, or in a relationship, the vast majority of us want sex in some sense. So casual dating can be perfect for that. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with two consenting adults hooking up purely for sex dating. It’s also a great way to see what you really like. The type of people you like, the type of sex you enjoy. And just a wonderful way to experience life.
Now, I’m a happily married man who has only ever been with ONE WOMAN. So if I suddenly found myself as a single bachelor hitting the dating scene, then yes, I would very much like to explore my options before looking to settle down. And that’s one of many reasons people prefer casual relationships.
Casual Relationships are so much easier in the modern day
Casual relationships can be a legitimate option for many people – even more so in 2019 with all the technological advances on offer. These days you can have as many virtual flings as your body – or sometimes your wallet – can manage. All from the comfort of your own bedroom.
For the modern-day singleton, casual dating can offer a much more freeing lifestyle with very little in regards to having a complicated relationship. Then you get all the variety that you want and do things when YOU want to – convenience is a big thing these days!
But not all casual relationships are made equally. So let’s take a little look at the different types of casual dating and what makes them so different.
Looking at the different types of casual dating
In essence, there are four different types of casual dating: One-night stands, booty calls, fuck buddies and friends with benefits. I dare say most of us have heard of these terms – or at least a few of them. So what’s the difference?
One-night stands
One-night stands are the simplest form of casual dating. I dare say I don’t actually have to explain what they are as we all understand the nature of people hooking up for one night of sex. These types of relationships often happen on wild nights out or are even arranged via dating websites – even more so these days.
Having a one-night stand is the perfect option for anyone who just wants sex with no strings attached and nothing else. Simple as that.
Booty Calls
Booty calls are rather similar to the one-night stand in the sense that they’re purely about sex. There’s little to no friendship involved and both parties work on the basis that they are just in contact for sex.
This is a great option of casual dating for two consenting adults who purely want hassle-free sex. No bullshit relationship, and no flirting with a bunch of people on the off chance you might hook up. Honestly, if I was single, I would be all over the booty call!
Fuck Buddies
Fuck buddies are essentially what happens when booty calls start to engage more on an emotional level as well as a sexual one. They don’t just have sex with each other but often share their feelings and may even have non-sexual encounters.
They’re not exactly in a relationship but this is much more than just a casual relationship based purely on sex. These are often the types of casual relationships that may lead to an actual partnership – and you never know, maybe love – further down the line.
Friends with Benefits
I know what you’re thinking: what’s the difference between a fuck buddy and a friend with benefits? Good question. Well, the difference usually revolves around which came first: the sex or the friendships. Friends with benefits are often friends first who then have the added benefit of sex later on. They’re basically friends who end up acting as booty calls for each other. Which sounds awesome, right!?
Obviously, this is probably the most likely form of casual dating that will lead to a long-lasting relationship – or it could ruin a friendship and make things a little awkward. But if both parties know it’s just casual dating and the sex doesn’t mean a relationship then perhaps things will be fine.

If you’re single, then why not give casual relationships a chance? Perhaps you want no strings attached dating to see how things turn out. Maybe you’ll just end up with a one-night stand, or even several of them, which is hardly a bad thing. But you could also find your soul mate. You just never know.
