Things to Consider When Moving for Love

If you are thinking about moving abroad for love, you’re not alone. Did you know that one in four people are willing to relocate across the world to be together with somebody they’ve fallen for? If you’re not sure whether the time is now to do it, then it’s time to read through this article.

Romantic relocation is the stuff of stories and fairy tales, but matters of the heart are always going to be tricky, and engaging an immigration lawyer to figure out how to do it is not always the easiest thing to do. Expecting passion to last is always the goal, but of course it doesn’t always work out that way. The thing is, that can be the case even if you don’t move abroad for love. You could meet somebody local for you and it still may not work out. So, here are some things to consider when it comes to moving abroad for somebody that you love.

  1. Have you considered beyond what your heart is telling you? Depending on the goals that you have in life and your lifestyle, this decision to go abroad could be the right thing for you or it could not. Have you asked your partner whether they would come to live in your home country rather than you live in theirs? It’s always easy to let love do the talking, because love makes you look at things through those rose tinted glasses that are always so pretty. You have to consider beyond the love feelings that you have and think about the day-to-day tediousness of life. There are obligations that you’ll have, from paying bills to making sure that the house is well managed, and yes, you should be doing that together. But if it’s skepticism you are feeling, then now is not the time.
  2. It could last. If you are at the point where you are considering moving abroad for somebody that you love, then there’s a good chance that your relationship will last. Marrying somebody because you are in love with them is always the best reason to marry them, and over 70% of surveyed couples say they stay together for more than a year after they relocate, which is important. The thing is here you have to remember that how you feel right now at a visit, is down to the fact you don’t see each other often. Could you stand to live together? Could you marry each other and be around each other every single day? If the answer to that is that you don’t know, don’t move.
  3. It has to be the right reason. You should consider that the reasons beyond love are important. Don’t expect it to be perfect all the time, because you’re going to be saying goodbye to your job, your friends, your family and all of the things that you love about your lifestyle. Maybe you have a favorite sandwich at your local deli, but the new place doesn’t have the same deli or the same sandwiches. Little things like that can make you homesick, and an international move can distance you from all of those things. It’s a good indication that you are independent and resourceful, but if you’re moving because of one person it can get pretty lonely. It’s definitely something to consider.
