6 Great Ways To Kickstart Your Summer!

Summer is fast approaching again and it’s pretty safe to assume that the previous year gave us all a summer we’d rather forget. And although 2021 hasn’t seen the full restoration of ‘normal’ life, the current COVID-19 vaccines have brought some light to the end of this long, dark tunnel. It may mean more freedom to move around than last year – although any major family holiday plans to cool beach destinations could well remain on hold. Regardless, it’s hard not to get excited about the sunny days and warm nights. That said, here are some fun ideas you can use to kickstart your summer this year.

Plant a summer garden

With summertime knocking on the door, there isn’t a better time to start planting your veggies and fruits. It doesn’t matter if all you have is a small porch; you can still create a small summer garden of your own. Also, whether you live alone or have a large family to help you, you’ll find that planting a garden offers immense health benefits. Plus, it’s enjoyable too, especially when you’re able to get the whole family involved. Your kids will also be able to learn a lot during the process while bonding with you at the same time.

It doesn’t take a lot to start a small summer garden – just learn the basics, and you should be set to go. Gardening also offers several benefits that go beyond the summer. For starters, it offers an easy source of fruits and veggies, helping you save some cash on your groceries. Secondly, it offers an excellent outdoor workout time if you’ve been locked up inside for too long. Furthermore, gardening is known to improve your mood and a well-kept garden could even increase the value of your home.

Go camping….. in your backyard

Depending on where you find yourself, it might still be impossible to go out for summer camping. But if you have a backyard with just enough space, you can set up a unique camping ground at home. You’ve been locked up indoors for too long not to love this idea.

Camping in your backyard may not be the same as driving to a location away from home. But you can be confident that it will still give you a fun and memorable experience, especially when you get your family involved. Plus, you get to save a lot of money on fuel.

All you need to do is get your camping equipment ready as you’ll do for any regular camping trip, prepare your backyard, set up your tents, and you’re good to go.

Take a walking tour around your city

If you’ve been itching to stretch your legs, then why don’t you try touring your city for a while? It should be fine to reconnect with the sights and sounds you’ve missed for over a year now. If you live in a modern city, you should have access to or download a free walking tour map of your location.

If that’s not available, you can also create a tour route of your own if you know your way around your city. Take the time to re-experience those beautiful landmarks and unique spots in your city, and the best way to welcome the summer. You can grab a friend or take your family along if you prefer to have company. You can also opt for riding a bike through town instead. And if there are hiking trails available, why not give hiking a shot?

Gather for movie time

If you haven’t tried watching a movie together as a family during the lockdown, then you should try it now. Choose a particular night, decide which movie to watch as a family, and have everybody ready in their pyjamas for a movie night. The perfect movie time experience can easily follow the family cooking time and try to make it memorable.

For example, instead of sitting behind the dinner table like you usually do, enjoy your meals during movie time instead. You can also have snacks and drinks after your meals while watching your movie. Pro-tip; if you want your kids to enjoy the movie, you should let them decide which one to watch. If you’re too tired of being indoors, you can set up an outdoor movie night instead.

Catching up with friends and relatives

Depending on where you live, you may have the opportunity to go back to your old life if you’re fully vaccinated. So, if everyone in your family or group is fully vaccinated, you can try catching up with friends and relatives you haven’t met since the lockdown measures took effect. The younger kids, especially, will be delighted to see their grandparents again. You can also meet up with old friends for coffee in your favourite places. It’s incredible to think that these are some of the regular activities people took for granted before COVID-19 changed everything.

Bring out the old BBQ

Believe it or not, nothing brings a family together and strengthens the bond like a meal cooked collectively. Sure, you cook meals all the time, but the first BBQ of the summer is different – it is special. Get the family together and decide which proteins and BBQ side dishes you want to prepare; that’s where the fun should start. Next, decide whether you want to cook the whole meal together or assign different cooking tasks to each family member.

It’s all about the fun, but be sure you supervise to ensure that your meal turns out straight – you’re still going to eat it at the end of the day! The outdoor BBQ is a good idea if you have a large family and enough outdoor space. If you’re not yet fully confident and you don’t know your way around building your BBQ grill at home, you’ve still got some time to learn all the BBQ DIY you need to know.
