Mastelo
Mastelo is another traditional and much beloved dish in Sifnos, which you have to try if you visit the island. This traditional recipe features chunks of lamb which are marinated in garlic, herbs, and red wine and then slow-cooked in a traditional clay pot until the lamb is beautifully tender.
The resulting dish is hearty and rustic but also refined, with layers of beautiful flavour which develop over hours of slow simmering.
Mastelo is usually served with roast potatoes or crusty bread, making it a lovely, satisfying meal that is perfect for sharing.

Fava
Fava (yellow split pea puree) is a staple of the Sifnian diet and a testament to the island’s agricultural heritage. Made from locally grown yellow split peas, fava is cooked until creamy and smooth, then seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, and herbs.
Served as a delicious dip, spread, or as side dish, fava is a versatile and delicious addition to any meal.

No visit to Sifnos would be complete without sampling some of the island’s traditional pastries and sweets. From honey-drenched loukoumades (Greek donuts) to almond-filled amygdalota cookies, Sifnos offers a tempting array of treats to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Be sure to try the famous loukoumi, a chewy confection made with mastiha resin from the mastic tree. Or indulge in a slice of melopita, a traditional honey pie made with local cheese and flavored with cinnamon and orange zest. Delicious!
