• Make sure that you have adequate storage. Taking care of your power tools means keeping them safe from the rain. Moisture that gets into power tools can corrode the electrical component, and that can deteriorate the body and introduce rust. Rust is the one of the worst things that could happen to your power tools, so you need to ensure that you maintain the efficacy of your power tools and a shed in the garden or a dry area of the garage is a good place to start.
• Keep the original case. It may be tempting to get rid of boxes or plastic cases that your power tools come in, but try not to do that. Keep them so that you can properly store them in the boxes and the polystyrene that were made for the shape of the power tool in the first place. You don’t want to have to walk into your garage or your garden shed and see your power tools lined up haphazardly. This is especially the case when you know that you could be having them all dry, in one place, and standing upright properly. Power tools are usually packed in a hard and sturdy case, especially in the case of drills or electric screwdrivers. Keep these safe in the garage.
• Invest in anti rust liners. If you keep any of your power tools in drawers in your garage, make sure that you line them with anti rust liners so that you can keep the moisture out. This will ensure that your most expensive power tools are moisture free and you’ll be able to reduce the damage that is caused. You could even use something as simple as silica gel packs.
• Treat them well. After every use, even your garden tools, give the power tools a clean. Giving them a wipe down with a damp cloth, and getting rid of any dust or dirt or debris is important. A little bit of effort on your part in keeping dust and grime away will keep your power tool in its best form for as long as possible. You could even use air compressors to blow air through the lawnmower and any leaf blower vents to get rid of any dirt or deposited grass.
