It’s easy to get trapped in a loop of negative thoughts, which then makes us restless and distracted. We’re often so caught up in our worries about the past and the future that we forget to stay present in the moment.
By practising mindfulness, you can focus your attention on everything happening in the here and now. Mindfulness is the ability to perceive, observe, think, and behave.
There are also several benefits of practising mindfulness, such as stress relief, chronic pain relief, and improved sleeping patterns. It can also help to reduce depression and anxiety.
Don’t feel guilty about taking some time out of your chaotic schedule to reconnect with yourself and your surroundings. If you’re a beginner to mindfulness, you could also take a spiritual counselling course to learn more about it and maybe even help others.
Here are a few simple ways to practice mindfulness in your daily life.
1. Focus on Your Breathing
Let’s start with one of the most common activities of all – Breathing! This is something that we all do unconsciously throughout the day.
Take a moment to focus your attention on your breathing. Observe the depth or shallowness of it. This will also help you focus your mind on one thing and cast aside all other distractions and wandering thoughts.
Take a few deep breaths, and focus on your inhales and exhales. Try to repeat this process a few times each day, especially when you’ve got too much on your mind.
2. Connect with Your Senses
When you’re lost in thought, you tend to lose awareness of your surroundings. A great way to bring yourself back to the present moment is to focus on your five senses i.e. smell, touch, taste, sound, and sight.
Pay attention to where you are, what you’re doing, and what’s going on in your surroundings. What do you see? What do you hear? What do you feel? Observe everything!
Ground your mind by focusing on the simple day-to-day happenings around you. This can effectively calm your mind.
3. Take a Mindful Walk
While walking, it’s easy to get so caught up in your thoughts and worries that you fail to notice everything that’s going on around you.
Walking meditation is a great way to bring yourself out of your autopilot mode and reconnect with your surroundings. Find a calm and peaceful place to walk through and focus on your steps, your breath, and your muscles as you move.
Keep your attention on the sensations of the moment and take a look around at the sights and sounds that you often ignore. You may discover something amazing that you’ve never noticed before.
4. Practice Mindful Eating
Eating is another everyday activity that you could easily turn into a mindful practice. While eating, more often than not, we’re distracted by our phones, our work, the television, a book, or a conversation.
Instead of distractedly scoffing down your meals and snacks, focus on the taste, smell, and texture of the food. Carefully chew your food and savour each bite. This will also help you digest your meals better.
When you sit down for your next meal, turn the television off and keep your phone aside. You could also try eating with your non-dominant hand to ensure that you don’t eat too fast.
5. Practice Active Listening
While listening to others speaking, we often zone out halfway through the conversation and try to think about how we’re going to respond. Sometimes, we may also internally judge what they’re saying or get lost in our own thoughts.
The next time you’re having a conversation with a friend or a family member, don’t just hear them speak, but actually listen to them. Make it your goal to pay attention to what they’re saying and understand their perspective.
By practising mindful listening, you can also improve the quality of your conversations and your relationship with your loved ones.
To Sum It Up
One of the best ways to relieve your stress, sooth your anxiety, and be present in the moment is to practise mindfulness in your daily life. Step out of the confines of your negative thoughts, centre your mind and body, and connect with the world around you.
Try to move on from your past, stop worrying about your future, and start living in the moment. Practice gratitude by directing your attention to the positive aspects of your life. Take breaks as and when necessary, and stop biting off more than you can chew.
Along with its numerous benefits, mindfulness can also help you improve your productivity and create a healthier daily routine, regardless of your age.
