WHAT ARE THE MAIN CAUSES OF MALE INFERTILITY?

The path to conception can be both exciting and frustrating – it can be a bumpy ride and things don’t always go to plan! If you’ve been trying to conceive for a while without success, it might be time to get some expert advice and support. One thing you can do to take back control of your fertility journey is to learn more about the causes of infertility so you can better plan your next steps and feel more prepared. Here a London fertility centre explores some of the causes of male infertility.

Health factors

Most causes of male fertility problems are down to abnormalities with the sperm, both in terms of sperm count and delivery. A low sperm count or reduced motility will reduce the chances of conception and can be caused by a number of health factors, including diseases (such as diabetes or an untreated infection), undescended testicles, or other health problems such as varicoceles (enlarged veins in the testes). Sperm damage can also be a side-effect of taking certain medications or undergoing cancer treatment. In addition, structural problems caused by the presence of scar tissue, previous injury, or a birth defect can block the flow of semen, hindering fertilisation.

Environment

Sometimes sperm are damaged by environmental factors, such as exposure to noxious chemicals or extreme heat. Pesticide residue on food consumed by males can contribute to a reduced sperm count, as can endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as BPA (found in plastics and food packaging). In addition, exposure to heavy metals such as lead, for example, when working in a manufacturing environment, can cause toxicity which increases the chances of sperm damage. Working in a high-temperature workplace, or taking saunas frequently, can also have a harmful effect on sperm.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle habits can also impact male fertility. Taking recreational drugs regularly or drinking a lot of alcohol can affect sperm production and motility, as well as smoking. If you’re trying to conceive, it’s important to consume a healthy, varied diet low in processed, sugary, and fatty foods. A diet high in nutrient-dense foods creates the optimal conditions for high sperm quality. You should also think about quitting smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug-taking, or at least reduce these habits as much as possible.

Knowing the reasons for male infertility will give you the knowledge to take appropriate action, such as changing your lifestyle or seeking fertility treatment, to increase your chances of getting pregnant.
