As far as outdoor pursuits go, gardening is a superb and all-encompassing approach to imparting useful skills and introducing children to the land that feeds and sustains us. Kids who grow gardens tend to eat healthier and are more inclined to try new fruits and vegetables. Eating what you sow is half the fun of gardening.
Kids can engage in gardening as a physical activity that gets them outside and in the dirt. Children greatly benefit from this direct tactile interaction with nature. Growing their sense of competence and capability via gardening helps kids develop confidence.
Here are 5 simple veggies to cultivate with kids whether you want to start a vegetable garden or grow a few container plants. Growing these vegetables with children is simple and risk-free.
Carrots
One of the most simple crops to cultivate is the carrot because it can endure most climates. If you have a vegetable garden, you might have to grow a smaller variety, such as Chantenay Carrots, which require less room. These varieties are also the best ones to thrive in cooler climates.
Picking the first carrot is always so much joy since you cannot see how large your carrots are growing underground. You’re completely taken by surprise and have no idea what to expect. The youngsters like selecting their carrot stem and pulling to see what sprouts.
Peas
Peas may be grown in pots and are also quick-growing and simple to grow. They are the most enjoyable to harvest since kids enjoy removing the shells from the pea pods.
Peas are ideal for making the most of your crop because they can be frozen or stored in the refrigerator for about 5 days. Because they are so sweet and crisp, sugar snap peas are a favourite of mine and my children’s.
Green Beans
Growing green beans in a vegetable garden with children is ideal. They are simple to grow, easy to plant, and weather-resistant. Beans come in a wide variety of varieties, including runner, climbing French, and dwarf beans.
Beans can be grown in pots and are ideal for a sunny, well-drained location. You will need a structure for them to climb (a trellis or climbing netting), but you can easily make this with twine.
Potatoes
Since potatoes can be grown in container bags rather than a vegetable patch, they are a fantastic vegetable to raise with kids. Additionally, due to their versatility in the kitchen, almost all children enjoy eating potatoes. It’s a lot of fun for youngsters and somewhat resembles a science project because you start with a seed potato. When the seed potatoes have “eyes,” you can plant them in a deep bucket or potato bag.
The kids should add extra soil each time the plants reach the surface. Children may easily learn how to take care of themselves by using potatoes as a vegetable. It’s a good idea to hold off on harvesting your potatoes until the potato plant’s blossoms have all but completely withered away.
Cherry Tomatoes
Another excellent vegetable (technically, fruit) to grow with children is cherry tomatoes. Cherry tomato plants often provide a lot of tiny red tomatoes and are quite productive. These are ideal for eating as snacks and for adding to salads. Kids prefer them over larger variety tomatoes by a wide margin since they are also slightly sweet.
