The teenage years are a time of change and growth. This is the time when your teenager is starting to make their own decisions, and figure out who they are as a person. It can be difficult to know how to support them through this process but they need you now more than ever. They will have to make the first major decisions that will impact them in the future, and that’s daunting for them. As a parent, you need to be ready to help them with these things. These are some of the big life decisions you should be prepared for.
Subject Choices At School
Choosing what subjects to study at school is the first big decision that teenagers get to make. Even though they might change their minds in later life, this is their first opportunity to think about what they want to do. They need to make sure they pick subjects that interest them, and that will set them up for the future. It’s important to encourage your teenager to think about what they want to do in the future and help them research their options. It’s tempting for them to just pick whatever subjects their friends are doing because they think it’ll be a laugh to be in lessons together, but it’s important to discourage this. However, you should also make sure they know that their choices at this stage don’t necessarily have to dictate their whole life.
Further Education Plans
After they finish school, your teenager will have to make the decision about whether or not to stay in education. This is a big decision as it will impact their future career prospects. If they decide to go to university, they need to think about what course they want to do and where they want to study. They will also need to look at options for student accommodation and make plans to move out. They’ll be budgeting their own money for the first time too. It’s important to help them research their options and make sure they’re making the right decision for them. If they decide not to go to university, there are other options available such as apprenticeships or gap years. They need to weigh up all the pros and cons before making their decision so they don’t end up with a lot of student debt for no good reason.
First Relationships
Your teenager will also have to deal with their first serious relationship. This can be a difficult time for them as they’re trying to figure out their own feelings whilst also dealing with the feelings of another person. It’s important to encourage them to talk to you about what’s going on and how they’re feeling, especially as they make decisions about whether they want to continue in the relationship or not. They might not want to talk to you but it’s important to make sure they know they can come to you with anything. Remember that even though it seems like a silly teenage romance to you, it’s a lot more than that to them. This is also a good time to talk to them about sex and relationships so they’re well-informed when the time comes and you can make sure that they are safe.
Your teenager is going to be completely lost in these big decisions without your support, so it’s good to be prepared.
