Fishing is the process of catching fish. People fish for different reasons. It could be for food, sports or as an occupation. You can do fishing using other techniques, and most of the methods can be used for both fresh water and salty water.
The fishing technique you are likely to use depends on how much you want to fish and why. If you are fishing for fun, you do not need complicated fishing methods. On the other hand, if you’re going to catch fish professionally, you will need advanced fishing methods. This blog post will discuss different fishing techniques and how to undertake them.
Angling Technique
The angling fishing method uses a hook attached to a line with bait. Angling is a method that many people generally use since it is most accessible.
You need to have a hook, line, bait, and sometimes a sinker for the angling method. You can use a variety of baits, for instance, carp boilies used to catch carp amongst other types of fish. This method is used when capturing a few fish, not large scale fishing.
Spearfishing
Spearfishing was majorly used in the past years. It is a traditional fishing method where you nail fish using a spear on a long pole. It’s a method people do for fun if fishing is a hobby. This method is used in shallow waters where fish are visible. In addition, you can spearfish by wading in water or off a boat.
Longlining
This fishing technique is used majorly for commercial fishing. It is because the method aims at catching a lot of fish at once. Longlining involves using a long heavy fishing line with hundreds of hooks with baits hanging from it.
Longlining is done on boats called longliners which use winches to hump on the line and operate in deep waters. Longlines can be a few miles long. This method is commonly used for catching tuna, swordfish, sablefish and halibut.
Fishing With Nets
Netting is also one of the most common methods of fishing. It is also used for commercial fishing. You can use many fishing nets; for example, gill nets are set as a wall with holes.
Trawling is another type of netting where a trawler boat drags a large net through the water. Finally, hand nets are small handheld nets used when the hoop is open, amongst other netting methods.
Electrofishing
This technique is one of the modern fishing techniques. Scientists majorly use it. It is done in freshwater lakes where you use electricity to stun the fish, then check the population of the fish and return the fish unharmed.
Trapping
This method entails sinking baited traps to the seabed bottom, hoping that fish will swim in and get trapped. Traps are used to catch invertebrates such as crabs and lobster, and fish. They cannot escape when the fish, lobster, and crabs swim into the traps. You then pull the traps to the surface to take out the fish.
In conclusion, fishing techniques keep advancing with the modern world, and new ways keep coming up and modernizing the older ones. Over the recent past years fishing technology has been growing, increasing the capacity for boats to catch the fish. Fishing methods also vary in different locations and cultures.
