The High School Years: 5 Ways Parents Can Help

Unless you plan on homeschooling your kids, the time will eventually come when you have to send them to high school. As you probably recall from your own experience, it can be a difficult phase of childhood.

Fortunately, there’s a lot that parents can do to support their children and give them a helping hand. Here’s what you need to know:

Teach Time Management

Children don’t worry about time management in primary school. But the moment they hit high school, everything changes. All of a sudden, how they arrange their day matters a great deal.

As a parent, you can teach your children time management skills. You can show them how they can “block” time for certain activities, such as homework, coursework, and after-school activities. You can also show them good study habits, such as doing active exercises instead of passively reading from a book.

Talk About College Early

Children can sometimes feel a little directionless in school. It’s hard for them to imagine what their adult life will be like when they are so young. So they will often pursue multiple directions in the course of their studies. This approach is okay – most young people don’t know how they want their lives to unfold. But you should also start talking about college early and, if you can, try to provide some kind of job experience. This often helps to focus kids so that they invest their time in the things that really matter to them long-term. It can be tempting for them to pay for college papers but steer them early and they will avoid this pitfall.

If you send your child to boarding school, staff there will make every effort to ensure that kids have a rich life outside of lessons. The reason for this is that it cultivates a sense of belonging and helps to create rounded personalities. Children never exposed to sports or hobbies can suffer later in life.

As a parent, you can fulfill a similar role. You can ensure that your child has an outlet they can enjoy after lessons finish. High school life needs to be more than just academic study.

Keep Up To Date With School Changes

Schools will often implement policies and initiatives to improve the education of students. As a parent, you can assist in this process. You can use PTA meetings and so on as platforms to make sure that the school adopts policies that you feel will support your child’s education.

Give Your Child Transition Experiences

The jump from primary to secondary is tremendous. The atmospheres are often totally different. Most parents throw their kids in at the deep end – and that strategy can work. But you can also give your child a heads-up for what it will be like by going to open days or taking part in programs where older students teach younger ones.

Most schools will also offer new students an orientation day or week. As a parent, make sure that your child is available to take advantage of these.

So, there you have it: some of the ways you can help your child thrive in high school.
